Phonics & Reading
As a school we use ‘Letters and Sounds’ for phonics. In YR the children learn Phases 1-4 and they will then revise Phases 3 and 4 in Year 1. After this the children are taught Phase 5 in Year 1 and then Phase 6 in Year 2. The children will continue to revise phonics in KS2, linking more to spelling than reading.
All children in the school will bring home a reading book each night. The school uses Oxford Reading Tree and Collins Big Cat. There will be a range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry and there are useful comprehension guides at the back of the books. The children will also take home a library book and are encouraged to read for pleasure in school and at home. As a school we send out a half termly magazine called ‘The Book Corner’ for parents and children to share together.
